Recently, there has been much written about the need for RoHS compliance by manufacturers. The purpose of this letter is to acquaint you with the current dates of compliance, Leviton’s actions and access to some “frequently asked questions” (FAQ’s). The European Union (EU) enacted the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) effective July 1, 2006, applying it to electrical and electronic products and their component parts offered for sale in the European market (EU). Leviton Manufacturing Company, Inc. has already updated its equipment and internal processes to produce RoHS compliant products for our customers selling to the European Union (EU) market after the July 1, 2006 deadline based on availability of RoHS compliant components and raw materials from our suppliers. Leviton is making every effort to meet our customer’s requirements for RoHS compliant products in unaffected markets as well. Unfortunately, some of our suppliers have not completed their compliance efforts as of now and are working actively on their product or process conversions to become compliant as soon as possible. In such instances, our purchasing and engineering resources are actively looking for RoHS compliant alternate suppliers.
Domestically, there is a California State law that will go into effect on January 1, 2007. Its scope is limited and has no effect on Leviton products. There is a pending California State regulation, similar in scope to the EU RoHS Directive which is scheduled to go into effect at the earliest date of January 1, 2010. Leviton is aggressively pursuing availability of compliant products for customer delivery well before this pending deadline.
