Antimicrobial Treated Devices

Leviton has developed antimicrobial treated wiring devices to help keep the surfaces of our switches and wallplates cleaner. By incorporating an antimicrobial additive into the product material, antimicrobial treated devices help to inhibit the growth of mold, mildew, fungi and odor-causing bacteria on the surface of the devices in between normal cleanings.

The Durability to Withstand the Most Vigorous Cleaning Routines

TOUGH: Made durable in order to withstand harsh chemical cleaning products, stringent washings, and UV lights with minimal wear and tear

CLEAN: Antimicrobial additive helps protect the device from the growth of odor-causing bacteria, mold, mildew, and fungi

FAQs

By incorporating an antimicrobial additive into the product material, antimicrobial treated devices help to inibit the growth of mold, mildew, fungi and odor-causing bacteria on the surface of the device in between normal cleanings.

Silver ions embedded in the material substrate are released via ambient moisture and enter the cell membrane. Silver ions destabilize the cell membrane, stop respiration and inhibit cell division whilst blocking the replication of DNA.

Lab tests demonstrate that the antimicrobial material on the devices remains intact when subjected to 15,000 cleaning cycles (equivalent to 10 years*) each with a sponge that was saturated with one of the following common cleaning products: ammonia, isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and bleach.

*10 years is based on 4 cleaning cycles per day.
**1 cleaning cycle = 1 wipe

The JIS Z 2801:2000 is an internationally recognized industrial standard for evaluating antimicrobial efficacy in antimicrobial products. This standard is accepted by laboratories in the U.S., Japan, Germany, and Korea.

Independent lab tests consistently demonstrate that Leviton silver ion antimicrobial technology is effective in inhibiting the growth of many common staining and odor-causing bacteria, mold and fungi.

If the powder coated wallplate becomes scratched, chipped or damaged the antimicrobial protection in that area will likely be compromised. It is a recommendation that the plate be replaced to ensure a fully treated surface.
